5'2" Hallet, Davis & Co. Grand Piano
Hallet, Davis and Co. 5'2"
“The Phoenix” When this piano came into the workshop, it was in very bad shape. Years of neglect had caused many problems: the soundboard was cracked, the finish was scaling and flaking, and the top lid had been missing for as long as anyone could remember. This piano had made a lot of music in its lifetime.
Bryan Hartzler immediately saw the potential and began the painstaking work of bringing it back to life, with the goal of making it sound even better than ever. Bryan worked with a mathematician to redesign the scale of the soundboard and strings to optimize the tone. He built, by hand, a new lid and rubbed every square inch of the new black lacquer to give it a beautiful sheen. Bryan has spent hundreds of hours with this instrument.
Why should you buy this grand piano? It has a round rich tone (pleasantly surprising for its size) that is the hallmark of pianos restored by Bryan Hartzler, whose ear for voicing and tone color is singular. This is not some soul-less Chinese import, though you could buy one of those for about the same money. This piano is hand-crafted in central Ohio, using centuries old techniques. Although the name plate says “Hallet, Davis & Co.,” this is really a “Hartzler Piano,” lovingly brought back to life by technician/artist Bryan Hartzler. He knows every one of the thousands of parts of this delightful piano. You can be sure this instrument now rises from the ashes, a phoenix, ready to make beautiful music once more.

1891 Steinway A
Take a time machine back to May 5, 1891, the day Carnegie Hall in New York City has its grand opening with guest composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Imagine the splendor of the Guilded Age in America, top hats and horse-drawn coaches in a bustling big city of new immigrants and a rising middle class. In that same city, in the same year, this gorgeous Steinway piano was born.
Now lovingly restored to its former glamour and elegance, this fine instrument is waiting to find a new home. Experience its refinement and good manners; enjoy its cultured voice; let it teach you about romance. Imagine the hands of craftsmen who used hand tools to hew the arts and crafts style daisies of the legs (or are they sunbursts?) and meticulously carved the elaborate music desk.
The soundboard is original and Bryan Hartzler never considered replacing it because it has survived for over 100 years in wonderful shape and preserves the voice of the past. Sit down to play this piano (be sure to bring a Chopin Mazurka or Schumann’s Kreisleriana). Don’t be surprised to hear the clip-clop of hooves on cobblestone as you commune with this Lady of the Victorian Age.
